About Satellite 3D View

This tool uses high-resolution satellite imagery combined with a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) to render the Earth in 3D. It is perfect for:

  • Virtual Hiking: Scouting mountainous terrain before a trip.
  • Urban Planning: Viewing city layouts from a bird's eye perspective.
  • Geography: Understanding the true scale of geological features.

What this 3D satellite viewer does

The MapToolHub 3D Satellite View tool combines satellite imagery with terrain rendering so users can pan, zoom, tilt, and rotate a location in three dimensions. It is designed for inspecting mountains, coastlines, urban form, and large geographic features from a high-resolution map view.

Users can search for locations, adjust terrain exaggeration, reset camera direction, switch to fullscreen, and share a link to the current view. The page is useful for geography study, virtual scouting and urban planning references.

The tool runs in the browser and focuses on visual exploration rather than storing user locations or requiring account registration.

How to navigate in 3D

  • Pan: click and drag.
  • Tilt and rotate: right-click and drag, or hold Ctrl and drag. The Tilt and Rotation sliders do the same thing precisely.
  • Touch screens: drag two fingers up or down to tilt, twist them to rotate, pinch to zoom.
  • Quick views: Top-down, 45° and Low angle set the tilt in one click; Reset North / Pitch returns to a flat, north-up map.
  • Orbit: slowly circles the center of the view for a hands-free flyover.

What does terrain exaggeration do?

The terrain is built from a digital elevation model: a grid of ground heights draped with the satellite image. Exaggeration multiplies those heights. At 1× mountains have their true proportions, which can look surprisingly flat from above; around 1.5× makes ridges, valleys and river terraces easier to read. Set it to 0 for a flat image.

Where does the imagery come from?

The base layer is Mapbox Satellite, a seamless global mosaic of satellite and aerial photography from several providers. Images were captured at different times, so the season and date vary between places and even between zoom levels. Heights come from a global elevation model assembled from public and commercial sources.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hide labels and roads?

Yes. Labels and roads are off by default, so you see clean imagery. Turn on Labels & roads when you want place names.

How do I tilt and rotate the 3D view?

Right-click and drag, or hold Ctrl and drag. On a touch screen, drag two fingers up or down to tilt and twist them to rotate. The Tilt and Rotation sliders set exact angles.

Why is the far distance blurry when I tilt the view?

Distant terrain is drawn with lower-resolution tiles so the view stays fast. Lower the tilt or zoom in to bring the area you care about closer to the camera.

Is the satellite imagery live?

No. It is a seamless mosaic of satellite and aerial images captured at different times, so the date varies from place to place.
